Manufacturers usually know their sales and their purchases. What they rarely know precisely is what a finished unit actually cost to make — because material consumption, wastage, labour and overhead live in different places.
This connects the bill of materials to the job card to the stock ledger, so consumption is recorded as production happens and costing is a report you run rather than an exercise you commission.
